Limited
The fastest of the three-strong Limited class field was Dave Norton, in the Spec Clutch Limited RWD Nissan 240SX. Demonstrating that the Nissan 240SX can go around corners quickly, not just sideways as so many that compete in Formula Drift do, Norton’s 1:25.186 would have also won the Unlimited RWD class at PBIR.
Winning the Limited FWD class was Louis Murphy, in the IPGParts.com Limited FWD Acura Integra. His 1:34.074 was enough to best Andrew Meet, in the WTDR Limited FWD Acura Integra Type R. Bringing some old-school flavor to Global Time Attack, Murphy and Meek’s normally-aspirated Honda’s demonstrate the appeal of having big fun on a small budget in Global Time attack.
Unlimited
For the third time this season, the Unlimited AWD and Overall win would go to Jeff Westphal, driving the GST Motorsports Unlimited AWD Subaru Impreza. It may have looked easy, but things never are. The black Subaru had problems from the beginning of the weekend, with the team having to pull the transmission and replace clutch parts before Westphal had a shot at the circuit on Saturday. He would need almost no time in setting the fastest lap of the weekend, stomping the field with a 1:16.709 lap time, and recording his third Overall victory in the three GTA events in 2012. As you would expect, Westphal also set the record for production-based cars at PBIR.
Also competing in the Unlimited AWD class at PBIR was Ramind Abdolvahabi, in the PROS Mitsibushi Evo 8. Abdolvahabi would steer his Evo 8 to a time of 1:28.685, taking home $200 for his second place in Unlimited AWD.
The lone Unlimited FWD car in Palm Beach, Chris Rado and his infamous ‘FWing’ would trip the scoring lights at a 1:20.810, the second-fastest time of the weekend at PBIR. With no crashes or fires to contend with on this weekend, after setting his time on Friday, Rado would sit out Saturday’s sessions.
Also the lone representative in Unlimited RWD was Cameron Worth, in his Petit Racing Unlimited RWD Mazda RX-7 FD. It’s a surprise that we don’t see more Mazda RX-7 FD’s at Time Attack events, so Cameron’s bright red Mazda was a refreshing change of scenery.
With things wrapped up at PBIR, Global Time Attack now looks to its next event, August 4-5, at New Jersey Motorsports Park in picturesque Millville, NJ.
