The wedges are welded into both frame rails. The black stuff you see is Eastwood rust converter coating. This penetrates into the seams and kills any rust, converting it into a hard, black, non-rusting surface. We treated every seam and welded area with this to stop any rust that hadn’t yet made an appearance.
These plates beef up the frame rails themselves. When installing them Zach drilled holes in them and added some addtional plug welds to make them even stronger.
These corner gussets beef up the upper shock tower area.
There is another gusset that goes from the upper strut tower to the firewall. We are going to run the roll cage to the shock towers first, then weld this gusset in.
Christa seals every single seam with 3M seam sealer. This modern seam sealer is urethane and will not crack and let water in like the OEM sealer. It is almost a pity to cover up Zach’s beautiful welds with urethane gloop, but when examining the rust damage throughout the car, we found in most cases the rust started where the factory sealer got brittle and cracked, letting water into the seams.
