Project Frankenmiata – Salvaging the Chassis

There were a couple of spots where the cuts left a small gap. We simply bridged these with the nearest piece of rust.

You've seen the quality of our workmanship, so it should come as no surprise that we decided to farm out the important bits to Pierce Motorsports. I've known Jim Pierce since our motorsports careers briefly crossed paths in the California Rally Series around 2002 or so. In the strange world of 2WD rally, we found ourselves running some pretty tight points races while I was driving a B15 SE-R and he was driving a 302-powered Ford Ranger. Whodathunkit?

It's always important to have your cage built by someone who understands the particular kind of racing you're doing. Jim has done off road, rally and road racing, so he knows first-hand the idiosyncrasies of each, and how the safety equipment has to be done to work right.

In our case, we were most concerned about room. I'm tall, a Miata is small, and our seat is mounted on sliders to accommodate our multiple drivers. This puts headroom at a premium. Luckily, we didn't have a roof, and didn't care how goofy our cage looked.

You can see here how much higher the main hoop is than the windshield frame. This suited us just fine.

Jim actually made our cage largely from scraps (at our request). The main hoop was a failed first attempt at the main hoop for the Mazda3 rally car in the background, and the A-pillar bars didn't quite fit right in the Boxster they were first bent for. Using scraps saved him time, which saved us money.

Because we frequently race against NAZCAWR sized competitors, we had Jim install some serious NAZCAWR door bars. Ingress and egress would be quite difficult with a normal Miata cage and these huge bars, but our high roof makes it quite easy.
