Cover the combustion chamber using a piece of plexiglass that is also sealed with grease. Notice that our plexiglass cover has a series of holes drilled into it. These can be used to fill the chamber with fluid or as vent holes to let the air escape during the process of filling the chamber.

It’s important to place one of these holes close to the edge of the chamber, as it will allow you to tilt the cylinder head slightly to purge the last bit of air from underneath the plexiglass cover if necessary.

With the cover securely in place, begin to fill the chamber using a burette. In our case, we used a digital “bottle top” burettewith red lamp oil. However, chamber volume can also be measured by using a typical laboratory type burette. We have also used water, solvent or similar low viscosity fluids just, remember water makes things rust.

Usually, it’s good practice to repeat this process three times and then calculate the average volume for each chamber. When completed, remove the plexiglass cover and use a turkey baster to remove the lamp oil.

Our final combustion chamber volume measured 42 cubic centimeters (CC). This was one cubic centimeter more than the original chamber volume of 41 cubic centimeters that we measured before the headwork.

With the cylinder head work completed and the combustion chamber volume verified, we will shift our attention to the bottom end of our B18C1 build. Stay tuned for part two of the engine build, which will detail the conceptualization of a high compression, long rod B18C1 set up.
