The exhaust tips exit on both sides of the truck behind the rear wheels. |
Next we strapped Project Tundra to the Technosquare Superflow dyno for some power testing. On the dyno, our fears that the TRD exhaust might be too loud were quickly allayed. The exhaust has a nice slightly deeper note and is amazingly not that much louder than stock. We ran the truck for a bit and completed about 10 dyno pulls to get the ECU’s short term trims to settle down.
Clean installation, great fit and excellent quality are all trademarks of the TRD exhaust. |
Once the readings were stable, Project Tundra gained 7 wheel hp from 290 to 297 and 6.7 lb ft of torque from 320 to 326.7. A good note is that these gains were pretty much across the board over an unusually wide range. This gives quite a bit more area under the power curve so the results are actually much better than the peak gains suggest. As we have been doing a lot of towing lately, in fact over 500 miles worth in the last week, we have noted that our truck has gained about one mpg while towing.
The polished stainless tips look sharp and will stay that way for a while. |
Driving, you can feel the improvement especially when towing like we have been all week. The exhaust note is quite pleasant; the sound is a little deeper and throatier than stock but there is absolutely no droning or irritating overtones. It definitely isn’t loud. We feel that this is how the truck should sound stock! Even the wife doesn’t mind. At wide open throttle, you definitely won’t need any convincing that you are driving a powerful V8.
7 hp and 6.7 lb/ft of torque are gained across the board over a wide range for a significant increase in area under the curve. |
There may be some exhausts on the market that have more peak power than the TRD exhaust but when it comes to fit and finish, warranty friendliness, legalness and width of powerband, it will be hard to beat the TRD system. Stay tuned; what TRD part gives a huge power gain while still being emissions legal and warranty friendly? We will be installing and testing it soon!
