Although it showed moments of speed, the Robispec RX-8 suffered from teething problems all weekend that kept it from reaching its potential.

Hope was going hopelessly too fast to make the trick turn 9 and spun mid corner and in a heartbreaking instant fell from 1st to 5th.  In the melee Dai Yoshihara slipped by to a second place behind Stepanyan with Richard Ho in the APM Acura RSX coming in third.  Pattarpong Note in the Buddy Club Honda Fit came in a surprsing 4th, a good showing for this underpowered car.

The race deciding move, Stepanyan passes Hope.

On Sundays race, the second of the liberty GP’s double header weekend, Dai Yoshihara qualified on the TU pole with Edik Stepanyan on the outside of the first row.  Andy Hope qualified 3rd but was unable to make the race due a failed radiator that might have been damaged in his off road excursion the day before.  Dai had been complaining about handling problems during qualifying and his crew had found failing rear shocks but had no choice but to start with the shocks in place.

Dai Yoshihara put the MotoIQ Sentra on the pole for Sunday’s race.
Dai Yoshihara and Edik Stepanyan sat on the front row for Sunday’s race.

At the start Stepanyan took an easy lead that he would hold for the entire race.  Yoshihara radioed to his crew that the rear shocks had completely failed rendering the car almost undrivably twitchy.  Dai told his crew after 3 laps that the car was oversteering badly and that he would probably spin in turn 9.  Seconds later he did just that, the man that drives sideways for a living was actually spinning in tricky turn 9.

Blown rear shocks caused severe handling problems for Yoshihara during the race making him easy prey for Stepanyan.
