Whereas the coated and wrapped downpipe is registering 50 F less. Although we don't have an external exhaust gas temperature gauge hooked up to the Supra, considering normal EGTs exceed 1000 deg F under boost, who knows how hot it still is in there! And some of this heat is probably radiant heat from the uncoated/wrapped portion of the turbo housing because, as you pan left and further down the downpipe, the temperature drops significantly.
And yet with all of that heat surrounding and inside the blanket, the outer portion of the PTP blanket remains at a relatively cool 150-plus degrees. You can put your hand on the PTP Lava blanket and not get burned. Keep in mind that the turbo housing itself sees more heat than the downpipe (which is also why turbine housings are cast iron).

Even the silicone boot in front of the “cold-side” compressor housing is hotter than our PTP Turbo Blanket.
We’re not kidding. You can touch this all day. What this means is the hotter air is contained in the turbine, helping turbo response, while the air in the engine bay is kept cooler to eventually make it into the compressor and provide more oxygen-rich air to be ignited. That’s the best of both worlds!
Here’s a quick video showing our pyrometer gun taking the temperatures at different locations to show just how hot things get around the PTP Turbo Blanket after a couple of more spirited runs, where we unleashed all 800+ WHP multiple times. By contrast to our pictures above, the exhaust here is over 300 degrees F hotter (registering well over 600 degrees F) while the PTP Turbo Blanket still stays close to the temp you saw in an earlier picture.
Thanks to our PTP Lava Turbo Blanket, we know Project Supra is maximizing its PTE CEA 6766 turbo's performance, while helping keep the air going into the engine as cool as possible. At just $165, this product is a great bang for your buck, and if your'e going to order one make sure to use PTP's “MotoIQ” promotional code to get a 5% discount!
