2016 Speedfest at the Classic Motorsports Mitty

If I have one negative thing to say about the event, it’s more of a criticism of HSR, and not a strong one. The event featured 9 “groups”, plus Can-Am, and a few others for select races. You didn’t necessarily know what was going to run in what group. Here a 2013 Lamborghini Super Trofeo runs in Group 9 “Post-Historic GT”.
How that is particularly different from this 2010 Porsche 997.2 Cup that runs in Group 10 “Modern Global GT/Cup Series, etc.” is hard to say. Yes, the group really includes “etc.” But who cares, honestly? We came to see cool cars running hard and that’s what we’re going to do.
Group 6 featured “Historic/Post-Historic Prototypes, etc”. Here we have a 1991 Chevy Intrepid in the GTP class running alongside a 2009 Oreca FLM09 running in LMP2. The Intrepid has its own Wikipedia Page. Does YOUR actual car have its own Wikipedia page? If the Le Mans Prototype Challenge Oreca doesn’t float your boat, also running in this class was one of the 2005 Audi R8 LMPs. It’s only one of the most successful sports racing cars ever designed and run.
Another simply iconic Group 6 car is the 1988 Jaguar XJR 7/8. Those wheels! Learn more about the historic XJR series.
Group 8 – “Historic Stock Cars”. Maybe you are a motorsports snob, but go actually drive a stock car on a circle track at 150+MPH (I did, at an Andretti Driving experience at Atlanta Motor Speedway, on the high banks) and you might change your mind about how hard just turning left is. These cars sound great and watching 10 of them turn laps (left AND right!) on a road course is all kinds of fun. This is apparently a 2009 Ford Fusion, but everything I found shows it is carrying the 2007 livery of Stephen Leicht who raced in the Busch series.
A 1970 Ford Boss 302 running in Group 5 – “Big-Bore Historic Sports Cars”. Watching SCCA club racing in the ‘60s and ‘70s must have been a real blast. Perhaps this photo needs an Instagram filter…
A 1965/2008 BTM Cheetah roadster. This is a replica built in 2008 by BTM race cars. There was supposedly an original Cheetah in attendance, but I did not see it running the day that I was there to cover the event.
