Sneak Peek: The Engines of IMSA Weathertech GTLM
The cars in the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship are particularly exciting this year due to very notable newcomers introducing some new boosted engines. In addition to the stalwarts from GM and Porsche who happen to be representing the naturally aspirated crowd, are three new boosted engines from BMW, Ferrari, and Ford.
GM proved that a tried and true package is often the best with this being all that separated the cars after 24 hours of racing at Daytona and taking the top two spots on the podium. The guys at GM were kind enough to let us get up close and personal a couple years ago. I dug up this photo from GM Media.
The C7.R has massive intake plenums to optimize the breathing as much as possible. The Corvette race car is a bit unique in that it makes significantly less power in race trim with its 5.5L NA engine compared to the street car’s 6.2L supercharged engine. The race engine makes in the ballpark of 490hp whereas the street engine is rated at 650hp.
Just some naturally aspirated goodness with long tube headers.

And this is about all I could find for a picture of the engine. Um, it has a single exhaust tip. The engine is a 4.0L flat-6 making around 470hp. Picture from Porsche.
