Both pictures show an overall large increase in cornering speed between the two events. The data traces also show a noticeable increase in lateral acceleration. If we take a look at the results of the data report for the track segments generated by AEMData, we can evaluate exactly how much time the improvements made to the car.
The charts above show a lot of data on the lateral and longitudinal acceleration of the car as well as overall time spent in each section of the track. Comparing sector times for turn 2 and 8 and 9 shows some interesting results. Overall, the greatest time improvement was made on turn 2, where .7 seconds was shaved off the cornering time between the two events. The sum total of the time improvement through 8 and 9 was also .7 seconds. It is somewhat surprising to see such a large time improvement in turn 2 over 8 and 9, considering that the average speeds tend to be much higher. Regardless, the positive news behind this data is that the recent aero upgrades are taking the car in a positive direction that we can quantify. We will use this data to continue to improve the car, and we will keep expanding the role that data has in our vehicle aerodynamic development program.
Overall, data is an integral part of the design and decision making process at Jager Racing. We presented a lot of data from various perspectives within the team to show how data can be utilized in different ways. While there is a certain learning curve that comes with any data logging system, we hope that we have shown the benefit of investing time and money into a data logger. Also, when considering the market options, we feel that the AEM AQ1 is one of the best data logging options for the grassroots racer at $395. In the next section we will go over how we installed the AEM AQ1 in our car, and some of the lessons we learned in the process.
