Datsun 510: Are You Sure?

,

The lines are classic. The fender flares, as they're integral to the fibreglass body work, look like they're part of the car.

The car has gone through a number of paint schemes over the years. After a search of ownership, JP found that he is the sixth owner of this Datsun and that it has been white, yellow, and now black. There might have been another colour in there that he does not know about. JP absolutely gives high praise to Oscar Lopez who did the body and paint work.  Many of the car's panels are fibreglass, but the name of the original manufacturer of these fibreglass parts has been lost. The front lip looks like it could be a BRE piece. The front and rear quarters are fibreglass and contain awesome flares to readily allow the 225s to be housed quite comfortably. These panels required extensive rebuilding as they showed wear and tear from sitting for so many years plus the bumps and bruises from years of racing. Not yet mounted on the car are fibreglass bumpers, hood, and trunk lid. There is no doubt, back in the day this car was built to win races. The car will be getting a roll bar in the future, it did have a full cage when JP got the car but he removed it. It was a cool set-up but not up to today’s standards. After ensuring that all of the parts were repaired and properly sanded, Oscar painted the car in Dupont black – the base colour used to tint all other colours. Very deep and glossy, it is classic. This way the 510 matches his Subaru Outback XT and his Ducati Monster 695. Which are both black.

There's no question, Oscar has done an amazing job on this 1973 Datsun 510. The body and paint are pristine. Here JP is uploading some 510 pics to FaceBook.
Personally, I hope that the underside of the hood stays like this. I just wish there was a bit of yellow.
In the trunk you can see the fuel cell but also what is left of the original cage (yellow) that was in the car. You don't see the relocated battery off to the side.
As JP moved the car around the shop parking lot, I couldn't resist snapping this photo. Beautiful wood lot, a converted school bus, the rusty patina of the GMC pickup, and a track ready Datsun.
A trunk prop? Why not, I wonder why we don't see these more often!
