Formula Drift 2013 Round 2: Road Atlanta

,

While Walker Wilkerson was able to make the Top 32, he was not able to get the Achilles Radial/Fueled Racing 240SX to the line as he broke during Top 32 practice. This gave the Hankook Tires/Motegi Racing Scion tC of Fredric Aasbo a bye run. The next pairing was Kenny Moen in the Lux Performance Nissan 350Z and Robbie Nishida in the Achilles Radial Lexus SC300 and the judges favored Kenny from lead to follow as the gap Kenny created when leading and the close proximity he put on Nishida while following gave him the nod.

Matt Field in the CX Racing 240SX went up against Chris Ward in the Bedrock Nation 240SX. With more wheel time at the Pro Level than Ward, Field held the judging advantage from start to finish and would move on. Vaugh Gittin, Jr. in the Monster Energy/Nitto Tire Ford Mustang RTR would face the 700hp SR20VET of David Briggs in the AV Fab/Achilles Radial Nissan 240SX. However, Briggs would lose it in his first run following Gittin after going off course. A perfect run by both drivers with Dave leading wouldn't be enough and Gittin moved on.

Chelsea Denofa in the BC Racing/Nitto Tire BMW E46 Sedan was looking great at Road Atlanta and was coming off a 4th place finish at Round 1. Joon Maeng, though, wasn't having the start to 2013 that he was looking for in the Lucas Oil/Nexen Tire 240SX. Despite qualifying for Round 1, a broken rocker arm took him out before he made a competition pass at Long Beach. The pendulum of luck swung back around into Joon's favor as Denofa's Bimmer wouldn't hold drift climbing the hill and straightened out giving Denofa a zero. After his run, Chelsea's team called for a Competition Time Out to try and fix the engine issue that was causing the trouble. This advantage would follow Joon as he moved on to the Top 16 after Denofa again straightened prior to the horseshoe.

Jeff Jones in the CX Racing/Hankook Tire Nissan 240SX and Kyle Mohan in the Mazdatrix/Nexen Tire Mazda RX-8 battled twice. In their first run, Kyle Mohan stopped drifting and ended up with a zero on his follow run while Jeff Jones received a zero by going off course at the horseshoe entry. Then on the One More Time, Jeff maintained a lot of proximity against Kyle but his run was seen as sloppy by the judges. While Kyle was leading Jones took out a cone at the horseshoe and straightened out. This gave Kyle the advantage that he needed and allowed him to move on to the Top 16.
