Garage Revolution’s Time Attack FD3S RX-7, Part 2

garage revolution fd rear hatch mount

The rear hatch is secured to the chassis via these two Dzus type fasteners. Talk about attention to detail again, these pieces look custom made and are even lightened for the purpose. That is unless GR happened to find an aluminum extrusion with this profile. The roof appears to be steel too. There's no evidence of any bonding or riveting of a carbon roof panel.

garage revolution fd rear bulkhead

Here's another look at the aluminum rear bulkhead I mentioned earlier. It appears to connect the wing, subframe, chassis, cage, and rear end all together. The air jack sits in the center of it.

garage revolution fd rear chassis

Here's an overall shot of the rear in all of its glory. This is as close to legit race car as a “unibody” race car is going to get.

garage revolution fd rear catch tank

The yellow-ish repurposed catch tank is probably a breather tank for fumes, venting, and overall condensation from the fuel cell, rear end, and transmission. Some might consider this janky, but it does the job well and its square shape makes it easy to mount.

garage revolution fd rear subframe

Here's a picture of the lower section of the rear subframe structure. The lower A-arms appear to pick up off a square section of machined billet material that is welded to the tubular subframe. I think there's some more coolness down there that we cannot see unless GR would be willing to pull the floor off for us next time.

garage revolution fd fuel swirl pot

Here's a shot of the fuel reservoir tank that sits right next to the fuel cell. It appears they are datalogging fuel temperature which is wise for a rotary since the fuel rails are so close to the engine. Fuel temperatures can drastically affect air/fuel ratios. The 13B-REW's fuel rails sit just on top of the engine and are nestled underneath the inlet manifold. With small fuel cells, Rotary engines can boil fuel without a fuel cooler. Just next to the tank are some old school mil-spec bulkhead connectors.

Here's another shot of the cantilevered rear wing mount, the rear aluminum bulkhead, and the sea of carbon that replaced all of the factory sheet metal.
