Garage Revolution’s Time Attack FD3S RX-7, Part 2

,

That's it for this year's coverage of the Garage Revolution FD. We would like to thank Aoki-san and the Garage Revolution team for letting Jeff poke around all over the car and getting in their way. While I'm sure they were slightly disappointed with the 3rd place finish (who likes losing right?), there is a possibility that GR will be back in Sydney for WTAC 2012. Although there hasn't been any official confirmation yet, Aoki-san did say he wanted to return to Sydney when I met him in December at Tsukuba Circuit. Hopefully the GR FD will make it back to Sydney for 2012.

About the only car that has confirmed to date for WTAC 2012 is a new entrant: the legendary RE Amemiya. Ame-san came to be one of my teenage heroes when I was building my FC3S RX-7 in my dad's garage (circa 1990). I asked my Japanese friend to translate every page of Option Magazine that had anything to do with turbo rotaries and a lot of it had to do with RE Amemiya. Anyhow, it will be great to see another rotary powered top contender at WTAC 2012. For more information on WTAC 2012 and the RE Amemiya entry check out this story on the WTAC website:  RE AMEMIYA TO DEBUT HURRICANE RX-7 AT WTAC 2012.

If both the GR FD and the REA Hurricane FDs can make it to WTAC, it's going to be an epic battle of the two ultimate FDs in the world. And guess what? Neither one has an LS engine in them.

The Hurricane RX-7 started life as a show car, but will be rebuilt as a time attack contender. RE Amemiya is no stranger to fast cars. They have campaigned FDs in Super GT GT300 for almost a decade now and have been tuning, building, and racing RX-7s since the mid 1970's. In fact, the REA GT300 FD won the Super GT GT300 championship in 2007.

Otherwise are you planning on going to WTAC? I always tell people that if you're going to take a vacation, you should take one to Sydney during the World Time Attack Challenge. You'll thank me with a beer at the pub next to the track because it'll probably be the best damn event in your life if you enjoy seeing the fastest cars in the world that you can actually relate to. Plus all of the spectators, enthusiasts, competitors, and companies that go are all very friendly. Aussies are really cool people. It's an excellent event with a great vibe. WTAC 2012 will be Friday, August 10 and Saturday, August 11, 2012 at the Eastern Creek International Raceway. ECIR is only 30 minutes outside of the beautiful city of Sydney too. I'm going no matter with or without a car. Hopefully with of course…

Coming soon is a feature on the MCA Suspensions S13 with the crazy aero. This car did quite well despite the car's simple mechanical configuration and moderate horsepower. The car was built in only a scant six weeks and came out of nowhere to finish in 10th place overall. That's not bad considering it was the car's first time ever on track and that it was just only 4 seconds a lap slower than the CyberEVO. Look out soon for an in depth feature and why the MCA S13 did surprisingly well at WTAC 2011.

Left: Jeff was pissed because flat whites weren't cutting it in Sydney. Right: Me after the WTAC party at Darling Harbour and on our way to King's Cross. We're coming soon to a country near you to shoot your car and break it down for the rest of the world to see. If you think you have a buff ass car, would like to share it with the world, and have the means to get us there, then contact me: eric at motoiq dot com.
