For those unfamiliar with the GTA session format GTA would like to dedicate the next two paragraphs to you. Read on and welcome, GTA newcomers.

Although the GTA field is comprised of 12 divisions there are only two different sessions that take place at the events – Group A and Group B. These groups are divided by a speed index regardless of class and division. The speed index is a designated lap time. Go faster than this lap time and you run in Group A. Slower cars are relegated to Group B. Last year at NJMP the speed index was approximately a 1:16 lap. This format creates the best opportunity for a traffic-free lap while the timing and scoring system separates each car by its division regardless of run group.

Every session counts at a Global Time Attack and as an added bonus the second half of each session is open to all cars in the field. At NJMP there will be five twenty-minute sessions on each of the two days (three Group B sessions on Day One and three Group A sessions on Day Two). The first ten minutes of each session are reserved for the dedicated group. When a session goes “hot” and the cars roll onto the track, the GTA course marshall will place a cone after the last car on the grid.  This gives the cars on track a clear shot at a flyer without fear of a slower car on an out lap creating a traffic situation. Any cars on the grid behind the cone must wait until the mid-point of the session, at which time cars on track will be shown a “soft checker” (checkered and white flags waived simultaneously) as other cars enter the track. While every lap in every session does count the GTA format favors time attack laps in the first half and the ability to test and tune in the second half. In short, there will be more than enough time for everyone to attack at the NJMP GTA.
