Bye Bye wimpy 2.6 liter , hello S54 M3 3.2 liter I-6 bad boy! |
The rear suspension is pretty straightforward. The links have had their rubber bushings replaced with bearings and the rear crossmember mounted on aluminum instead of rubber bushings. The links are also adjustable for camber and toe. A Speedway engineering rear anti sway bar will also be used. The rear shocks are KW Motorsports 3-ways.
The M3 engine is a work of beauty. The slant mounting helps lower the CG. |
The car’s 2.6 liter 6-cylinder engine has been replaced with a rocking 3.2 liter S54 M3 I-6. The S54 is a much more simple and straightforward engine than the M5 V10. To get to Formula D required power levels, Mike is turbocharging the engine. He fabricated a beautiful bundle of snakes equal length exhaust manifold from thickwall schedule 10 stainless tubing.
The Horsepower Freaks big plenum intake manifold uses the exotic stock ITB’s supplementing them with a large forced induction loving high volume intake plenum. |
A Garrett GTX GT35 ball bearing turbo will be pressurizing the intake charge. The turbo uses a 82mm 56 trim GTX billet compressor wheel. The wheel’s forged billet design allows the engineers at Garrett to design the wheel with a smaller hub section and thinner blades improving aerodynamics and greatly boosting compressor efficiency. A ported shroud 0.70 A/R compressor housing fights compressor surge by recirculating pressurized air if it starts to back up in the housing.
Mike’s bundle of snakes exhaust manifold is awesome looking and equal length to within a 1/2 inch per runner. It is made of thick schedule 10 cast stainless steel tubing for a crack free life and low thermal transmittance. |
The ball bearing center section provides superior thrust capacity and fights friction, speeding spool time. A 68 mm, 84 trim turbine wheel lives in a 0.82 A/R turbine housing which should allow the engine to breath well. The GTX turbo will be quick spooling and will produce over 600 whp, plenty enough to be competitive in the high speed world of today’s pro drifting.
The Garrett ball bearing billet wheel GTX GT35R will move lots of air for big power while having minimal lag. |
A Synapse Engineering 50mm wastegate provides plenty of capacity as well as having the innovative stepped piston actuator which can provide several different levels of boost response and boost pressure through the use of different substrates and wastegate spring preload.
Garrett GTX turbo and the Synapse 50mm wastegate as viewed from the bottom. No boost creep with this sucker. |
It is not realized the BOV’s have a big influence on driveabilty. The Synapse Syncronic BOV is highly tunable had has a big positive influence on driveabilty. |
The fuel system is being mocked up, a surge tank, dual Bosch 044 fuel pumps, filter and regulator. |
