NASA 25 Hours of Thunderhill – 2012

,

Honda Research West came out with a pair of Acura ILX's to compete in the E1 class.  The #27 set the fastest lap in the class with a 1:59.926.

Turn 4 cuts to the left immediately and the run up to the ski jump at turn 5 gives you just enough time to set up for the big rise over the hill where you lose sight of the track for a moment. The trick is to get pointed to the right over the hill as the car goes light, and not have too much steering angle in the car. It’s easy to get crossed up here, and limited visibility can be a problem.

Turn 6 sets you up for the run through 7 and the daunting turn 8, taken flat out in most of the cars in the field. As the rubber builds up, it’s imperative you make sure to always hit your marks here. Turn 9 is an uphill left hander that is faster than it looks, allowing for huge cornering speeds as long as you make sure you watch out for the bend in the track hidden by elevation at the exit of the corner that brings you down the back side of the hill. That blind exit could have you in the dirt if you unwind the wheel too soon. Turn 10 is a wonderfully simple left hand corner with plenty of camber to catch the car at high cornering speeds. 11, 12 and 13 are a quick tight complex, but important because they lead onto the long back straight. Heavy braking is required into turn 14, a late apex right hander that leads directly into turn 15 and the front straight where the clock will count down the 25 Hour test of man and machine.

Check out a couple day and night laps in the #79 Atlanta Motorsports Group Mazda MX5.

The Factory 48 Motorsports  Radical SR3 came in 1st in the ESR class.

The highly anticipated 034 Motorsports Audi TTRS definitely laid down some fast laps, but unfortunately its day was finished only 4 hours and 21 minutes into the race due to transmission issues.
