Nerd’s Eye View: LA Autoshow 2015 – BMW

A wheel speed sensor keeps track of the front wheel speed. My guess is for wheelie control and ABS. Paint marks on the bolts holding on the brake calipers are a quick visual check to make sure they have not come loose.
A sensor on the shift linkage is used for the factory equipped quick-shifter allowing full-throttle upshifts.
This sensor measures the travel of the rear swing arm. It’s probably the same sensor BMW uses on their cars to measure suspension travel.
Of course, rear wheel speed is measured using the toothed wheel as well. The spokes of the wheel are interesting in that they are not a simple I-beam shape. Well, maybe just interesting to me… And it looks like the rear swing arm is a mix of a cast part (rough surface finish part holding the axle) welded to an extruded part (shiny).
This is the left handlebar. My old 2005 CBR just has turn signals and a horn. This BMW has cruise control, ABS button, hazards, lap counter, turn signals, and traction control settings.
This is the engine bay of the M235i. As you can see, the engine bay is pretty crammed. The air box is on the driver’s side and the intake tube works its way over to the turbo on the passenger side of the engine.
Buried somewhere down there is the single twin-scroll turbo. Snaking through the space is an A/C line. Sitting above the exhaust manifold is a heat shield to protect an electrical cable wrapped in more heat protective insulation.
