Nerd’s Eye View: UMS Time Attack Evo

,

In order to develop cars to the extent that this Evo has been pushed, one must have half a brain. Tony began forming his automotive grey matter before he could even legally drive! His first car being a family cruiser that he tinkered with at 14. This turned in to his love affair with a Mustang 2 and blossomed in to spending a large portion of his High School years in a vocational automotive class. Upon graduation from High School on the East side of the country he entered the army where he was a generator mechanic during his term of service and after that enrolling in a local technical institute where he breezed through his associate's in 1 year. After that Tony uprooted his wife and they headed off to AZ to be rid of the East Coast where he worked for various dealerships honing his skills and perfecting his craft.

UMS EVO Time Attack Rear End Kognition AIT
In this shot you can see the carbon trunk from AIT as well as a glimpse at the rear over fenders. The AIT rear bumper has built in diffusion strakes that are further aided by a certified fraudulent Feauxtex rear diffuser. The Kognition wing uses custom end plates and is chassis mounted, how exactly? See below!

He moved in to the tuning realm and in the early 2000's he was one of the few people in the Phoenix area that was competent with true stand alone tuning. He consulted for many different shops before starting his OWN shop in 2004 under the name UMS tuning. To this day Tony still runs and operates UMS and will take on ANY project of ANY make and ANY model. He is not afraid to get his hands in ANYTHING and prides himself on using his well rounded skill set and vast tuning knowledge to apply that to ANY platform that might cross his dyno! In addition to running UMS Tony is one of the MOST ACTIVE MEN in TIME ATTACK! He runs the Phoenix AZ based UMS Time Attack series he is the technical inspector behind Global Time Attack and can be seen helping anyone at anytime in the time attack world. Enough with the ranting let's sloppily segway to what you are all here for… The JUICY TECH. DETAILS!

UMS Evo Kognition chassis mount wing
Kognition offers a proper chassis mount so that the downforce created by the wing is placed directly on the chassis versus on the trunk lid or someplace less ideal. The aluminum uprights are further reinforced to the unibody to help eliminate any side to side flexing.

Between ALL of that he finds time to work on his labor of love insanity. What you see before you now is the result of years of trying to wring every last ounce of performance out of the car on a real world budget or lack thereof. Parts that work from many different manufacturers all implemented by Tony and the people he surrounds himself with and generally speaking he likes to “keep it local”. No unobtanium here, just good old fashioned hard work to build what he thinks will work! Like all cars, there is no perfect setup but Tony is pushing to find that recipe for ultimate speed and I have no doubt he will not rest until that is achieved… Ahhh who am I kidding, even when that is found he won't rest anyway, it's simply not in his blood.

UMS Evo cage
As we remove the carbon trunk to peak inside we can see the roll cage details. The cage is constructed from .095 DOM mild steel. As you can see the rear points are tied in to properly plated and shrouded gusset shock towers. The cage was TIG melted in place using ER70 wire.

UMS Evo Seat Position Sparco
Further inspection of the cage reveals modified and gusseted B pillars. Speaking of which, notice the seat position that is AFT of the sail pillars? The seat has been moved approximately 18 inches rearward with an extended steering column to improve weight distribution. This was primarily done to get the “300lb gorilla” further towards the rear of the car. Said primate is kept safe by a Sparco Circuit Pro Halo seat and an RJS Platinum 5 point harness.
