Something we didn’t get to feature in Part 4 with our D-Force wheels was a nifty, thin-wall deep impact lug bolt socket set sold through Bavarian Autosport, which includes 17-, 19- and 21-mm sizes.
I've been working with Bavarian Autosport since the turn of the century for my projects and they've never let me down. They've also always been my go-to source for anything O.E. related.
Made from chromoly steel, the outside of each socket features a nylon sleeve that protects the wheel finish during installation. Having dropped several impact sockets in the past (which can cause small, annoying dings to the wheel), this was a must-have. This pic also gives us an excuse to show off the lovely Wilwood 6-pot calipers featured in Part 5 again.
I mentioned earlier about my previous E36 M3, and it was nostalgic to see it again at MKC. However, this time it was brought there because the current owner hit something on the road (notice the missing center-front bumper guard).
Given the snowy season here in the Midwest, it's good to see that the owner is still rockin' the winter tire setup I’d sold him. In the snow, this red M3 was a hoot. Those are Wilwood/UUC brakes, too!
If you haven’t read our winter tire test featured in January, you’ll be amazed at the results. As an example, when I tested these Continental winter tires for a different magazine and compared them to Continental Extreme Contact 3 summer tires, the difference on this M3 from just 0-30-0mph was over a football field in length! Back to our Project E46 M3, we’re ecstatic with the way the car is coming along. At the time of this writing, we’ve already done some interior and exterior aesthetic improvements that we’ll share next time, and we’ll also be playing with more AEM EMS features. Stay tuned!
