Project Evo X GSR- Testing the K&N Cold Air Intake

So the remaining question was, would the K&N Typhoon intake make power?  We again took power readings and were very impressed with the results.  Once again taking the middle power readings, our Evo X made 293 hp@ 6995 rpm and 292 lb/ft of torque @ 4400 rpm, a gain of 16 hp and 16 lb/ft of torque.  The peak gains were 20 hp @ 7000 rpm and 17 lb/ft of torque @ 4400 rpm.  The gains were right about what K&N claimed.

The K&N Typhoon intake is a nice looking piece, the red crinkle finish of the charge tubes matches the red of the engine cover pretty well.

Looking at the boost curve we can see that the turbo spooled slightly quicker and our boost levels stayed about the same at 21 psi tapering to around 15 psi.  Our air fuel ratio leaned out at a still very conservative 10.5:1 which was probably responsible for some of the power gain.  With a nearly identical to stock long term fuel trim, this intake won’t drift in power over time either.  Our intake note got a little louder and you could hear the factory compressor bypass valve in operation a lot more than stock so if you absolutely hate the whooshing and hissing of a blow off valve you might not like this.  We felt that the noise was not that bad.  Many people will like the sound.
