This car looks like it's been to a chop shop! |
There's something to be said about neighbors that let you park a car in the driveway for so long, there's no air left in the tires and the car is basically sitting on the wheels. There's even more to be said about these neighbors when you start tearing it down piece by piece, while it's still parked in the driveway. She was already pretty bare to begin with (interior wise) but I finally decided to cover her up when I removed the hood permanently and she was sitting on jack stands.
And if I thought the body was rusted, the bolts were even worse! I'm so glad I had my tetanus booster a few months ago. Whatever couldn't be loosened was cut off. But I also needed to make sure she'd still roll so I could get her to the scrap yard. My basement became a burial ground for everything I wanted to keep. I walked an entire exhaust system through the front door and down the basement steps, setting it gently between the bar and projector screen. Down went the front and rear bumpers, side skirts, fenders- all a little rusty, but they could be cleaned up and are very hard to replace. The wiring harnesses, shift knob, pedals (needed for the conversion to manual anyways), mirrors, and miscellaneous reservoirs and brackets that could be saved were boxed up. The engine and tranny found a home in an increasingly messy Project Garage. My beautiful Griot's Garage floor paint was starting to resemble a Jackson Pollock painting of coolant, tranny oil, motor oil, rust, and anything else that fell off the two cars or their engines.
What a sad looking pile… |
Thanks to my friend Ian for spending a Saturday morning swinging by with his truck and trailer to dispose of my baby. Four mismatched wheels were fit on the car to get it on the trailer. A pair of vice grips connected to the steering rack (no wheel) provided some ability to steer. And back to these wonderful neighbors, one drove by as we struggled to push the car to the trailer and he quickly stopped and gave us a hand. With no brakes and no real steering, it was a balancing act to push the car forward without losing it on a hill. Finally, she was on the trailer making her journey towards that garage in the sky.
Meet your maker! | Any irony around the name? |
And then there were 6… It was sad to see her go but she was kinda cock-blocking my Sentra from getting a ride. Now that she's out of the way, my turbo paperweight can get out for the first time in 2 years. That was a whole other mess of carbon monoxide carcinogens for my body to inhale. Now Project Garage needs a serious Spring Cleaning!
That's some crazy toe out! |
