Project GD STI, Our Custom Stoptech Big Rear Brake Kit Comes Together!

The vane exits are shown here.  The friction rings are dynamically balanced for vibration control.

The Stoptech STR22 caliper is CNC machined from a forging. It is about a half pound lighter than the standard Stoptech ST22 caliper.  It is also hard anodized for corrosion resistance. FEA analysis is used to maximize stiffness while keeping weight to a minimum.  The piston diameters are correct for good brake pedal firmness, and correct proportioning.  This is super critical for correct ABS operation as well as overall performance.

The STR22 caliper uses high-temperature silicone dust seals instead of your typical rubber that hardens or even catches on fire with track use.  Most race calipers don’t use dust seals with reduces their service life on the street and these dust seals are a nice touch.

The calipers have stainless steel abutments that keep the brake pad backing plates from digging in and wearing into the caliper body.

We used Stoptechs 304 compound brake pads to match our current front pads. The 304 has reasonably low dust and is acceptable for mild track use with bigger brakes.

  1. Not being familiar with the factory GD STI rear caliper mounting, are there any concerns with the dust shield being strong enough to support the Stoptech caliper?

  2. Nice! I hope I can stop by and nerd out with you. I’m volunteering at Subiefest and I think my car will be on display somewhere TBD.
