Project Honda EJ Civic: Building the B18C1 Part IV

,

The function of a valve keeper is to keep the valve locked into the retainer and prevent it from dropping into the cylinder.  They can be a bit of a pain to install, but using a combination of a pick that we magnetized and Joe Lu’s long, skinny fingers, (that’s why the chicks dig him) we were able to finagle the keepers into place.  Sorry ladies, Joe is taken.

Stating from the right with just the valve and spring seat installed, you can see the progression of the valve and spring assembly.  On the far left, the assembly is complete with the valve as well as the Sunk2 springs and titanium retainers held snuggly in place by the factory keepers.

After installing all sixteen valves, this is what our freshly ported and rebuilt B18C1 cylinder head looked like.  Nice, huh?  *fap*fap*fap*

Again, we were too occupied actually assembling the engine and never took a photo of the different LMAs. So, we stole, I mean borrowed, one from the chaps over at Honda Tech.  Thank you, iliv2xlr8.

Before we could bolt our porn worthy cylinder head on, the lost motion assemblies (LMA) were installed between each pair of valves.  Depending on the lift of your camshafts and what year B-series you have, it might be necessary to swap out the LMAs from hydraulic to the updated Honda spring type, but more on that later.

As for now, I think I've given myself a bit of information overload, so stay tuned for the next installment of Project Honda Civic EJ where we complete the assembly and installation of our B18C1 cylinder head.

Until then, I think I'm going to do more “research” on youtube, and find out what this Harlem Shake phenomenon is all about…
