Project Infiniti G20 Racecar – Roll Cage Additions & Final Interior Prep

,

The harness under the dash will take a lot of patience, but as long as you methodically cut one wire at a time – periodically plugging everything back in and starting the car to make sure it still works – you should have a completed harness free of clutter and useless wiring in a matter of hours.  Our front harness consisted of the wiring for the ECU, gauge cluster, pedal switches and our cigarette lighter.  Though the entire fuse box and all under dash relays are not necessary we chose not to trim them too much for reliability’s sake.  This is what the under dash section of our harness was stripped down to.

Down to the bare necessities.

Once you have cut all the useless wires out of the harness, you will want to re-wrap them in split loom.  We used 5/16” split loom for the rear harness and both 3/8” and ½” split loom for the dash harness.  Some bundles were simply too fat for any split loom we could find, so we wrapped them in thick electrical shielding tape followed by a single layer of regular electrical tape.

Some of the wires on our modified harness were longer than others.  Instead of trimming them to match, we just neatly folded them and tucked them inside the split loom.  Cutting the wires will only increase the likelihood of failure or shorts due to the added junctions.  Not to mention that it’s a huge amount of work since the only way to do this right is to create your own harness from scratch!

Once you think you’re done plug everything back in, cross your fingers, click your heals three times and start your car.  If it fires right up crack open a beer, bag the harness up, secure it somewhere out of the way and rest up for the final stage of interior prep.  If it doesn’t…well, we hope you know a Sparky.
