Project Lexus IS-F Part 2: We test the PTS – Joe Z Series Exhaust

Project IS-F : We Test the Joe Z/PTS exhaust system
To set his exhaust apart from the others, Joe Z has these optional dry carbon tip covers.  These covers fit like a glove over the stock tips and click into place.  The fit and finish is superb-jewel like.  Even if you don’t like carbon fiber, they black out the tips nicely and in our opinion make a huge improvement over how the back of the car looks.

To differentiate their system Joe Z has optional carbon fiber tips.  The tip are made of dry carbon and fit over the stock chrome IS-F exhaust exits in the factory fascia.  They are very high quality and fit like a glove.  The blacked out look of the carbon really makes the back of the car look a lot better in our opinion.

After bolting on the exhaust, we strapped the car back on Technosquare’s dyno.  Our IS-F really responded to the PTS - Joe Z Series exhaust with a peak gain of 16 hp and 23 more lb ft of torque @ 4000 rpm.  The peak numbers don’t tell the whole story though.  The exhaust made a maximum gain of 25 more hp at 6200 rpm and made significant gains through the whole powerband.  This is awesome area under the curve and it’s area under the curve that makes the car perform better more than peak numbers.   We think the X pipe has a lot to do with this wide power increase.

The tips really improve the look of the entire back of the car in our opinion, making the exhaust go from gaudy to functional.

This is one of the best performing exhaust systems we have ever tested on any car.  Sound wise the PTS – Joe Z exhaust definitely has more of a rumble.  There is no annoying droning but the car is noticeably louder at very light throttle acceleration and makes beautiful music at wide open throttle.  At cruising speed the exhaust is nearly as quiet as stock.  When rolling at 70 plus on the freeway, the car is still Lexus silent until you punch it.  We think that this is one of the best sounding exhausts we have ever heard and it is quite worthy of this Japanese exotic.

Project IS-F : We Test the Joe Z/PTS exhaust system
The Joe Z exhaust rocks! 16 more peak hp with a maximum gain of 25 hp @ 6200 rpm.  A maximum torque gain of 23 lb ft was recorded at a low 4000 rpm.  Most importantly, look at the big gains the Joe Z exhaust makes across the board.  That’s maximum area under the curve and something not typically seen with an exhaust swap in a naturally aspirated engine.  So far our simple bolt on mods have netted nearly 45 whp.

With just two simple bolt on mods we have gotten 45 more wheel hp on a stingy dyno.  What more will we find in our IS-F?
