Project Mitsubishi EVO IX Part 6: More power

While at RC we had RC flow test and blueprint our injectors with their test rig. With the rig, injectors can be batch tested and matched for very close flow characteristics.  Blueprinting aids tuning, especially at low duty cycles.

Howard had to open up the stock metal throttle body gasket as well to accommodate the WORKS Aperture II throttle body.

Next we installed a WORKS Aperature II big bore throttle body.  The WORKS throttle body is basically a stock throttle body modified with a bigger 65mm throttle plate, up about 5mm from stock.  The WORKS throttle body also has improved shaft seals as the stock seals are known to leak badly at higher boost levels.  The leaks can be bad enough to affect tuning because as much as 2.5 psi of boost can escape past leaky seals.  We had to port the inlet and gasket of our intake manifold to accommodate the larger throttle body which we did easily with a die grinder and cartridge rolls.

The throttle body in place.

Next up the inlet tract we went to the inlet hose.  The stock inlet hose before the turbo is quite small and constricted.  Accordion pleats create turbulence and reduce flow.  We replaced our hose with a smoothly contoured Samco silicone hose.  We hope this will improve power by increasing flow to the turbo.

Our pimpy ARC induction box has a lot of volume to keep the Karman MAF happy and free flowing foam elements.  We added the weatherstips to help keep heat out of the box.

Finally we replaced our airbox with an ARC aluminum box from Mackin Industries.  A work of JDM art, the ARC air box flows really well through foam filters and has walls that stay far away from the MAF which some tuners believe is key to repeatable MAF operation.  We added some weatherstip seals to the outside of our airbox to reduce hot spillover air from increasing our charge air temps.

Our ARC Titanium coil cover saves weight and makes more power by blocking EMI induced back currents from interfering with ECU operation.  We are not serious but that sounds pretty good.  We got this bit of JDM flash from Mackin Industries yard sale.  Even MotoIQ can be ricey sometimes as long as it’s genuine JDM rice.
