Project MKVI Golf TDI: Let’s Tow!

,

Our new towbar has been on for a while now and most of the “your car has a big black penis” jokes have subsided around the office and we've just left the hitch on!   So what have we been using it for?
We like our bicycles here at MotoIQ as well so when we saw the trick little Thule 970 bike rack also available from PFJones we had them throw that in too!  Check out the video below to see how it works!

Here's the Thule 970 being put to good use carrying a pair of Cannondales!  We were a little scared at first wondering how it could possibly be secure enough to hold all that weight at highway speeds on just that little round ball but it works brilliantly without any wobbling or treachery!
We already gave it away in the title image but we also picked up a matching white mini-trailer for our Golf!  Fun fact, this trailer was purchased from Dave Coleman who says it has a little famous history as the very same trailer used in a Mazda Tribute advertisement to tout its towing capabilities!
We don't have a picture handy, but it's also has a tilting bed so we don't need ramps to load up motorcycles like our new KTM 1190 Adventure R!
And of course it's handy for trips to the Home Depot to pick up new refrigerators, grills and Mexicans Martins!

We (I) think it's safe to say that Project Golf TDI is the most versatile project car in our fleet now!   In fact, from this point forward let's just start calling it Project Go Anywhere, Do Anything, Haul Everything and Impress Everyone Coal Rollin' MKVI Golf TDI!

  1. Don’t forget about tongue weight ! That Refrigerator is way forward of the trailer axle and may have overloaded your Golf’s safe tongue weight rating. Usually you want about 10% of the trailer’s weight on the hitch up to the maximum rating.

  2. Hi, you mention about getting a replacement European lower bumper panel with the tow bar hatch.
I’m in England, and at least around here I’m pretty sure VW will only sell you that panel as part of the whole tow bar retrofit kit they sell. Factory fitted tow bars on mk6 Golfs are also quite rare here, so it’s not even a easy job finding one second hand. I’ve been looking for a couple of months now and still haven’t found one. 🙁

  3. Hello there
I’m thankfully that I found this information. I really enjoyed your article. I have been seriously considering to switch to a TDI with best mpg from a pickup with terrible mileage for my daily/work commute. I wonder what tranny do you have?? I really wanted to buy a tdi with manual but very HARD to find one here in AZ. Will Auto tranny be safe for towing 1500lbs? (I don’t towing that much like what it said in your article)

  4. I have a 2015 tdi golf I am wanting to make a trip to Alaska with a small tent trailer. I find this article very helpful. Any information on fuel mileage?
