Robispec’s Street Class Time Attack Nissan 370Z, Simple is Better?

The last interesting and highly functional detail is the cars aero package. Robi developed a highly functional system that adds hundreds of pounds of downforce to the Z’s chassis at speed. In the rear, a fully functional carbon, DHP composites single element race wing is mounted directly to the chassis via adjustable Robispec mounts. The mounts are cantilevered backwards on the body to increase the wings leverage on the chassis, multiplying its effectiveness without increasing drag. The more rearward position also places the wing in cleaner air flow as well as activates the flow under the car increasing the effectiveness of the front splitter.

Robispec’s rear wing is a real deal fully functional race car wing.  The mounts are cantilevered back to act as lever arms to make the wing more efficient at producing downforce.  A lot of what makes the car so fast with so little is its highly functional aero system
The wing brackets are easily adjustable for angle of attack.

The wing end plate makes the wing more efficient by reducing spillover on the ends of the airfoil.

The front splitter adds hundreds of square inches of downforce producing surface area to the cars front end.

The front splitter is 4″ long and attached to an alumalite belly pan. The splitter uses a nomex honeycomb core with carbon skins and is so beefy an adult can stand on it without damage. The front splitter adds a couple hundred pounds of downforce at speed on the front end. Finally the front end uses a pair of Robispec canards. The canards add a bit of front downforce but more importantly act as vortex generators that create a swirling vortex of air down the sides of the car. This vortex helps reduce air ingress from the sides of the car and help the front splitter and rear wing work more effectively. As a nice touch, Robispec bolt in tow hooks are used front and rear so if the car breaks down on track, it can easily be recovered with no further damage.

Front canards are vortex generators more than dive planes.

You might ask just how fast the car is. Well on Buttonwillow configuration 13 counterclockwise, which is becoming a worldwide time attack standard, the Robispec Z was able to rip out a respectable 2:00.5 minutes. This is a full weight, ungutted daily driven street car with a stock engine on normal full tread depth street tires! . This is a nearly stock car, no spherical bearings, no diffuser, no polyurethane, no trick suspension links. Add some power for more speed, you get our drift, the car in current trim is just a fraction of what the 370Z’s streetable potential is.
