Most land speed racers are a part of one of a dozen or so teams that are heavily involved with the SCTA. The Gear Grinders, San Diego Roadster Club, Road Runners, and the Rod Riders are just a few of the teams that compete for points championships each year. Wanna conquer land speed records at Bonneville and El Mirage? Better join up!
Miriam MacMillan, President of Rod Riders Racing Team and SCTA’s fastest “Kiwi”, made a 201.666 MPH in her destroked “K15” and successfully joined the El Mirage 200 MPH club. Note the highly sought after red and burgundy El Mirage and Bonneville 200 MPH club hats.
Check out the video above to witness Miriam break the blown gas competition coupe “H” record and enter the 200 MPH club.
Definitely not one of the cleanest cars at El Mirage, but we were intrigued by its rugged, Mad Max themed appearance. Apparently, this Corvette was originally prepared for the infamous open road race in Nevada, “The Silver State Classic Challenge,” but then the owner came down with a bit of “salt fever.”
For vehicles running over 200 MPH, the SCTA mandates a minimum of 11 pounds of fire extinguishing agent. Usually, land speed racers choose to have one system for the engine compartment and another for the driver’s compartment. This allows the driver to attempt to put out a fire in the engine compartment without unnecessarily covering the inside of the car with extinguishing agent.
