Safety comes in the form of a pair of Twisted Stitch Seats TS-1 seats with PRP 5.3 5 point belts that feature 3 inch wide shoulder harnesses.
Between them is the Parker Pumper clean air system. This filters out the sand and dirt that gets flung up as they race down the desert sections.
To make sure co-driver Casey Trujillo points Loren on the right path, which many drivers struggled with this year, a Lowrance HDS-7m GPS map is used. It features a 16-channel antenna, 6.4 inch LCD screen and SIRIUS Satellite Weather. This is actually an older unit that has been discontinued by Lowrance and has since been replaced by the HDS-7m Gen 2.
To keep their pit crew informed and so they can talk to each other, a Kenwood two-way radio system is installed just under the HDS-7m. That red thing below is is what was left of the engine air filter. More will be explained later.
When it comes to the King of the Hammers, you need the best wheels and tires that are both designed for crawling with lugs on the sidewalls and wheels that will take the abuse of rocks riding against them. For tires, Loren’s choice was the Nitto Trail Grappler M/T in a 40×13.50R17 LT. Yes, he is using a 40 inch diameter tire that is 13.50 inches wide with a 17 inch diameter wheel. When looking at the rig as a whole, it doesn’t even look like they are that large but the numbers don’t lie.
Nitto tires have proven themselves time and again at the King of the Hammers. Even here, you can see the large gouge in the sidewall but the tire is still holding air.
Crawling up rocks is tough on any compound of tire, but the compound of the Nitto Trail Grapplers ensured that despite slipping on rocks, the tires never failed due to loss of tread. There were actually zero tire failures on Loren’s rig and his confidence that there wouldn't be meant that he did not need to carry the weight of a spare.
