Stoptech’s Nissan 350Z Bombproof Brake Upgrade

 stoptech rotors
The 350Z kit comes with huge 355x32mm Stoptech Aerorotors in the front.  With alloy full floating hats they are lighter than the stock rotors even though they are much bigger.

To keep the Stoptech calipers streetable, they are equipped with piston dust boots to protect the seals from brake dust.  Normally race calipers don’t have dust boots because they usually end up getting oxidized and hardened from heat and race calipers are maintained frequently.  Unfortunately street calipers are usually not maintained as well and corrosive brake dust, dirt and debris often get to where they can abrade the seals and corrode the pistons on a racing caliper causing leaks. The Stoptech calipers also have OEM like anti rattle hardware to help reduce pad rattling and brake squeaking.

The rear rotors are 328×28 mm and are much lighter than stock.  They are also full floating.  We chose grooved vs drilled rotors to avoid the chance of cracking.

The Big Brake kit comes with two piece Stoptech Aerorotors.  These rotors have a proprietary low turbulence vane design which greatly improves airflow throughout the rotor for better cooling. The vanes are staggered at the inner diameter entrance for more air intake and are airfoil shaped in profile. In benchmark testing of the Aerorotor, it had the best airflow of any rotor on the market.  The Aerorotors are also directional so you don’t have reversed vanes on one side of the car like many other rotors. Better rotor cooling leads to longer life, less fade and more consistent pad performance.

 rear rotor parking brake drum
The stock rear rotors have a drum for the parking brake cast integrally into the drum.  The Stoptech hat has the drum machined into the hat.  The aluminum alloy is hard anodized but the parking brake should only be used when the vehicle is static to hold it in place.  replacing the iron drum with aluminum saves a ton of weight.

Stoptech race rotors are floated on the aluminum mounting hats using a special shoulder bolt which allows the rotors to move on the hats about 0.012″even when the bolt is fully tight.  Floating the rotors is a racing feature that allows the rotor to freely expand minimizing the thermal stress and coning that can happen in one piece and solidly bolted rotors. The difference in thermal mass caused by a solidly bolted on hat can cause the rotor to assume a cone shape at high temperatures or warp more easily.  Street rotors are not usually floated because they can be noisy.  Floating the rotors can also work to minimize piston knockback. Our kit comes with a 355x32mm or 14” front rotor and a 326x28mm rear rotor.

 stoptech rotor air vane inlet
The Aerotors are a centrifugal blower pumping air through the rotor.  The air inlets feature staggered vanes with every other vane set back.  This reduces choke at the smaller area annulus of the rotor.  You can see the set back vanes here.  The rotors also sit on vane shaped pillars on the hats.  This reduces heat transfer to the hubs.
