Tested: Palmer Performance Engineering’s DashCommand

DashCommand Product Review Factory Skin horsepower torque calculation
The skin that comes with DashCommand, dubbed “Tuxedo”, featured instant acceleration numbers, and HP and torque estimates.  While clean, and well-designed, we didn't need the constant reminders about how slow Project Hypermiler was, so we switched to a different screen.

In addition to instrumentation, DashCommand makes your OBDII code reader obsolete.  The built in Diagnostics feature gives you access to stored codes, pending codes (ever had your OBD-II car trip a fault during the smog check? I have), readiness status (for when you clear codes directly before a smog check), as well as a short description of what the code was tripped for.

The built-in code scanner is especially useful for diagnosing check engine lights, especially intermittent problems with the “pending codes” readout.  This is also useful come smog inspection time, as you can see if you're going to throw a code during the test, as well as determine if you've completed all of the readiness monitors (if you've recently cleared codes) before showing up.

The built in race track feature is an especially cool feature that you can use to quickly analyze lap times at the track, and commute times during the week.  Palmer coded the racetrack display to color coded sections of your “track” based on speed, superimposed on Google Maps.  Unfortunately, we have not yet had a chance to test this feature on a real racetrack, but we will verify its accuracy against equipment provided at the event.

DashCommand Product Review Track Feature Lap Times
The “Race Track” feature is useful for analyzing lap times with color-coded speed sections, as well as reminding you how poorly you chose for your morning commute's route.  This commute had plenty of soul-sucking bumper to bumper traffic.
