VIDEO: Rhys Millen @ Pikes Peak 2010
By Mike Kojima
Here is a really cool video of Rhys Millen in the PM580 attempting to break the 10 minute barrier at Pikes Peak a few weeks ago. This is another video by our buddies at Mad Media, the folks that did all of Ken Block’s stuff. This video has real tight editing and cool helicopter shots of the revolutionary PM580 at speed on the mountain.
I really like this video because even though I was there, my only view of the PM580 lasted but a few seconds as it blasted by me. Now I feel like I actually got to see the car run. For me to shoot Tajima’s Monster in detail meant that I had to forgo a drive to places like 16 mile where you can see a few miles of the track. This limited me to hiking a quarter mile up the road, not a good spot to spectate.
The car which was built in record time and had a very limited test schedule has problems with the shifting of its sophisticated computer controlled pneumatic sequential gearbox which hampered its record attempt when it refused to shift and stalled the engine causing a spin and problems with a restart. Snow, hail and rain also slowed the car resulting in a disappointing time. The car was fastest in some sections of the track in practice showing its potential.
Rhys will be back next year and the car will be much faster.
