In this episode, Mike and Martin dig into the driveline and subframe of Martin’s E39 M5 — a car that’s equal parts daily driver and track toy.
We go deep on the weak points of the E39’s aluminum rear subframe and how to reinforce it properly using the Dinan and Paragon kits, Powerflex bushings, and a DIY liquid urethane fill to control NVH.
From there, we tackle a refreshed driveshaft, center bearing, and an upgraded lightweight dual-mass flywheel from Partee Racing — saving 10+ lbs of rotating mass without introducing chatter.
We finish with a Dinan short shifter install and a discussion about clutch choices, street vs. race car tradeoffs, and our overall OEM+ approach to building a refined, reliable M5 that’s still fun to beat on.
Stay tuned for the next episode — we’ll be diving into the S62 engine side of things and the best preventative upgrades to keep it healthy.
