Christmas Comes Early! The 100 136 Drifters of December

By Justin Banner

The 100 Drifters of December at Summit Point Motorsports Park is quickly becoming a legend in East Coast Drifting. Sanctioned by Drift Nirvana, 100DOD is epic simply because of it's entry fee and what you get out of it. For $75, you get the chance to drift on SIX(!) full courses of Summit Point Motorsports Park, the “Bridge Course,” “A,” and ”Pistol Grip” on the Shenandoah Circuit, the “Hyperfest Course” on the Summit Point Main Circuit, and the “Red” and “Pink” Loops on the Jefferson Circuit. For those who didn't or couldn't drift, you could run on the Shenandoah Wet Skid Pad. Didn't want to do any of it? $10 let you watch or even ride along if you were lucky enough. I, however, went as Media and went on to judge the competition on Sunday.

Of course, this is how I start EVERY EVENT, filling up both tanks of my '94 Ford F150 XLT.

With a cheap entry fee and only an atmosphere that grassroots drifting can create, a few professional drifters will come out to 100DOD. Vaughn Gittin, Jr. has been coming since 2010 and Matt Waldin came out this year to give back to the up-and-comers. “Rapper” Dan Savage, an XDC Pro, came out with his Sikky 240SX, powered by a GM LS V8 engine. James Evans, also an XDC Pro, was also in attendance with his Sikky 350Z, but an ailing LS2 prevented him from enjoying the entire weekend. Rapper, however, would compete in the Sunday Competition, but more on that later.

Sadly, James Evans wouldn't be able to run his car for the rest of the two day event.

Formula Drift 2010 Champion, Vaughn Gittin, Jr., brought out one of his new Demo Cars to the event. It's a 2012 Ford Mustang with a 2012 BOSS 302 engine and proved that even his Demo cars have bite! He was having a blast all weekend and gave rides to lucky spectators. On Sunday, he wasn't drifting for the morning, but instead giving rallycross a try. No word if he will get a chance to compete in the X-Games, but there is rumor he is looking for a Fiesta to borrow.

Formula Drift Veteran and 2009 DMCC Champion, Matt Waldin, on the other hand, came out with his competition car. The Helix Energy Drink 350Z looked great all weekend while drifting with JR. He liked the laid back feeling and came to appreciate the idea of drifting to just have fun. He, along with Vaughn, also camped out at the track that weekend.

It ain't grassroots drifting if you don't have a train-drift line going!
