ALMS – Laguna Seca Race Weekend

,

A closer look at the aero package of the 2011 LMP1 Champion Dyson Racing Lola B09/86-Mazda.

PR1 Mathiasen Motorsport's LMPC entry spun coming out of the last turn leading to the front straight right as the green flag dropped to start the race.  Though the #52 was fast enough to qualify 5th in class, the rest of the field never looked back after their spin and the #52 finished last in its class.

The closest championship points race entering this weekend was in the LS engine based LMPC class where only two points separated Core Autosport and Genoa Racing.  With such a small points lead in the team championship CORE Autosport needed to have a good showing in Laguna Seca if they were to keep their championship hopes alive.

But luck was on Genoa Racing's side this weekend.  Nearing the end of the race the #63 Oreca FLM09 was very low on fuel and it seemed that it would need to make an additional pit stop as it had already been on track for over an hour.  Then a full course yellow late in the race completely changed the team's strategy.  The yellow allowed Genoa to keep their car on the track and the ORECA FLM09 crossed the finish line just 0.329 seconds ahead of CORE Autosport!  The win propelled the Genoa Racing team into the lead of the LMPC Team Championship points race by a mere 2 points.  This championship battle is going to come down to the final race of the season!
