Analyzing and Driving the NASA/Elan NP01: The Ultimate Affordable Prototype

,

Pre-Preg carbon is laid up in sturdy molds to make the body sections.  The NP01 is designed so the body is in 9 separate parts.  That way a crash is cheaper and easier to repair, you can just buy the damaged parts to replace rather than having to buy an entire front or rear body clip.
After the parts are placed in the mold, they are put in this autoclave to cure under heat and pressure.  This gives the parts the ultimate in wet out, compaction and strength with minimal weight.
Some of the NP01 body panels prior to installation.  NP01 kits can be assembled by one person with typical tools within 80 to 100 hours of labor.  This is anywhere from 4 to 6 weekends depending on how careful and motivated you are.
In this picture you can see the assembled drivetrain and suspension without the bodywork on. You can see the beautiful header and the airbox/intake manifold.  These parts give you the 20 or so extra horsepower over a MX5 Cup car and can push the NP01 to 155 mph.  You can also see the sidepod mounted heat exchangers, coolant swirl pot and push rod rear suspension.  The shocks are two way adjustable parts from motion control.  The shocks are designed to go two seasons without service. Push rod suspension was chosen so the shocks could be on top of the transaxle and easy to access for quick adjustments. You can see how all the typical components that might need attention during a race weekend are easy to get to.
The front suspension is also a pushrod design.  The NP01 uses the same control arms front and rear and the same uprights.  This is so an owner will not need to carry a lot of spare parts. All 4 hubs are the same and they come from a Cadillac CTS-V so spares are cheap and easy to find.  NASA plans to have NP01 spare parts ready and for sale at most of the major events where NP01's will be racing further making things easier on the owner.
The front shocks are also motion control two way adjustable units.  The push rod design makes the shocks easy to get to up on top.  The NP01 is designed so a driver will not need a pit crew on a typical race weekend so all check and adjustment items are easy to get to so a lone driver can race, make adjustments and do typical maintenance all by himself. The NP01 has to be one of the first racecars designed around the concept of making the car exceptionally cheap and easy to work on.
