G70+ has some absolutely beautiful race cars. Yellow, while not my favourite colour, absolutely works on this 1972 Porsche 911 RS owned by Douglas Kurtin.
The #160 1982 Porsche SC of Tim Sanderson is right on the tail of Robert Racki in the 1982 #18 1983 Baird & Travette Camaro. In this race, the Porsche placed first and the Camaro second. This is coming through Turn 4, a 160+ KPH (100+ MPH) corner.
I love watching cars fly through Moss Corner. #138 is a 1983 Porsche 944 raced by Alister MaClean, followed by Al Fergusson in #24 – a 1962 Jaguar E-Type. This 180 degree corner is the slowest section of the track, and really puts a lot of pressure on the brakes and the tires after they've come flying through Turn 4, then brake up the steep incline into 5.
The Race Division that we are coming up to now is the Formula Libre group, home to Radicals and Open Wheel cars. It is also the fastest group of cars on the track this past weekend, with fast times of 1:21.925 and the slower cars still doing laps in the 1:35 range.
These Radicals are powered by Suzuki Hayabusa engines. The #61 is a 2012 Radical SR3 RS flown by Matt Graham and Doug Allingham is in the cockpit of the #33 – a 2013 Radical SR3.
Here #32 is leading the way into Turn 10. #32 is a 2000 Mazda Formula raced by Eric Barrett and right behind is Andrew Marcus' #8 2014 Radical SR3 RS. I was with Andrew when he had the Radical out on track for the first time. I think I was smiling almost as much as he was!
Coming through Turn 2 these cars are closing in on 200 KPH (125 MPH) and accelerating as they do so! Wow! Here we have Tom Drake in a 1999 Van Diemen FR99 (eventually 2nd place), Ron Viggiani in a 2006 Radical SRS (eventually 1st place), and a 2002 Van Diemen RF02 (eventually 3rd place) raced by Fred Boss. On Sunday Fred won both of the Formula Libre races. Closing ground is Doug Allingham and, in the #61 car, Matt Graham.
Sandwiched between two cars we've already seen is Robert Burgess in the #81 2003 SR3. They're coming through Turn 10 and onto the front straight. It's possible that #33 keeps popping up in the pics because my friend Dave Gerryts is always working on it.
Join Thomas Gordaneer in his Radical SR3 – it will be as close as most of us can get to a ride along in a Radical. Here's a basic guide of corner speeds in MPH – with the first number being the speed at initial braking point and the second the slowest speed in the corner. Turn 1 (115/108), Turn 2 (120/110), Turn 3 (120/85), Turn 4 (125 and accelerating), Turn 5 (130/44), Turn 6 (75 and accelerating), Turn 7 ( 130 and accelerating), Turn 8 (135/105), Turn 9 (105/85), Turn 10 (90/70).
