Driver Profiles – Beth Chryst

,

After the MX-5 Cup what series would you like to progress to?

I think either ALMS or Grand Am.  I am not dead set on one over the other.  As long as I am doing what I love I will be happy in any series.

Who do you look to for guidance with your driving; do you have any racing idols?

I have always enjoyed watching Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch.  They both in my eyes are TRUE wheelmen and can get every tenth of a second out of a car.  However, at the track I listen to my fellow competitors who want to see me do better each time and will give me constructive criticism so I can better my lines.

Where and when was your first competition?

Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw South Carolina.

How did you do in that?  4th!  I was so happy with myself!

What was your first “race” car?

I actually had a Briggs and Stratton flat head.  (Like the one you find on your lawn mower but it runs on methanol!)

How old were you when you started racing? 15 years old.

Beth loves her helmet design. She selected the colors and the design out herself.

Do/did you get flack from the guys you race against? Or have the guys always accepted you as a female in your series?

The first race in the 2004 season (the race was actually December 2003) I had just moved up to a faster class and finished 5th the first day and won the next day.  This was at Daytona International Raceway known as the “World Championships”.  The gentleman I beat refused to stand on the podium and after a few hours we finally got to take the Podium Photo.

Is there other racers in your series (you don't have to name, names) that you love beating?

I would love to beat them all!  However, there are always a few that have a stronger meaning.

You have a great team that works on your car, who all takes care of Scarlet?

My father and I! My Mini Cooper S no longer has a spot in the garage so Miss Scarlet can be in there!

You just raced in your final race of the season, which was at Petite Le Mans; can you explain that experience to us?

I don’t think any words will ever explain the whole experience.  The ALMS cars are unbelievable. I remember watching night practice with my crew and my teammate and we just all looked at each in awe.  Entering turn one at 151 mph hardly slowly down and watching the cars barely track out with no movement is an unbelievable site.  There were fans EVERYWHERE!  It was such an amazing feeling to be a part of one of the best races in Road Racing.

This was your rookie season, what all have you learned in your first year in a car?

That it isn’t as easy as expected.  I thought with 10 years under my belt [in carts] I should be able to jump in and be quick.  More than anything, I have learned car control and in order to have the car control I HAVE to slow down my hands.  490 lbs is much different than 2600lbs, and I have struggled with that the most in my rookie season.
