Dry Ice Blasting Removes 30 Years of Grime With No Damage!

We didn’t pay for the highly focused dry ice detailing that can take hundreds of lbs of rice and hours of time but more like a quicker and courser cleaning to knock the bad stuff off.  Nissan didn’t highly finish the engine compartments of this era so we didn’t want to invest a ton on getting it in concours condition, just make this track-bound car clean and easier to work on.

Ok it’s time to get started with some blasting!

It is pretty neat to watch dry ice blasting, the grime disappears and so does the blasting media!  It is a very clean process.  When we were done, we were surprised to find that all the gunk that was blasted off turned into some sort of dust and floated away.  There was hardly anything on the ground!

The white corrosion gets blasted off with no damage to the hoses and wires nearby!  This process is much faster and safer than simple green and elbow grease.

The dry ice blast is making quick work of 30 years of baked-on gunk and corrosion.

If dry ice blasting isn’t in the budget my go to solution for the past few years has been Scrubbing bubbles and an electric pressure washer.
    1. spray liberally in the engine bay until it looks like it snowed there.
    2. Let sit for a min or two
    3. Rinse with an electric pressure washer (the gas powered ones are too strong).

Now this doesn’t alleviate the need for caution around electrical connectors, but other than moisture in a distributor cap I haven’t had any problems.

    1. I do the same but with simple green. I originally wanted to just clean things up and send it but the project is turning into a complete race car build with pulling the engine….
