For the first time since he was a rookie, Danny George has failed to qualify in the Top 32. A late build finish may have been what cost him since this is a brand new car for 2014. He had a fairly bad crash in practice into turn 1’s tire barrier and repairs forced him to rely on a single qualifying run. It looked great until he stalled on the final corner resulting in a zero.
Joon Maeng had a hard crash in qualifying and resulted in a DNQ. The damage is pretty extensive looking and many are wondering if a new chassis will be required or if the frame can be pulled back straight before Atlanta.
Daijiro Yoshihara qualified 26th in his new Garrett Turbo powered Falken BRZ. It was a purposely conservative run as he did not want to wad up the car before the next round.
Charles Ng made his return but was just short of Top 32 by 1 point. We’ll see him again at Round 2.
Of all the Nexen Tire drivers who had to scramble for new tire sponsors, Kyle Mohan placed the best with a 13th place qualification. This also makes Kyle the highest and only driver on the new GT Radial tires, who are a new tire manufacturer in Formula Drift for 2014.
