DAY TWO – MAIN EVENT
Manly men don’t wear sunblock! Boy do we have an over abundance of testosterone…and burnt skin! Not only am I now rocking a new sexy sunglass tan, but Jeff is the literal definition of a red-neck. If you were part of the lucky list of fans in attendance at today’s competition we hope you planned better than us monkeys, because it was another beautiful sunny California day!
The gates opened to the public at 10:00 this morning, and since practice started at 9:00, fans were welcomed by the sounds and smells of 32 teams working diligently to gain an edge on their opponents. Thumbs up to the Formula Drift team for putting together yet another fan/enthusiast friendly event, there is always something to do for everyone. Enthusiasts can take advantage of the numerous vendors on-hand who are eager to answer questions or get a closer look at the Formula Drift cars while the teams work on them in the pits. And if that’s not enough for you there is also a car show, live DJs, food, drinks, tons of free schwag and plenty of umm…scantaley dressed marketing specialists.
There was even something for the Hella-Flush crowd |
But no matter who you were, at 11:30 all eyes were on turns 9, 10 and 11 of the Streets of Long Beach course as the top 32 qualifying teams hit the track. It was good to see so many fans come out to cheer on their favorite teams. I’m not sure what the total attendance numbers were, but I can tell you that Formula Drift had to open 3 additional grand stands because they ran out of tickets!
It’s amazing how easy these guys make this look |
Once the tandem battles were complete and the smoke settled, Vaughn Gitten, Jr. was awarded the number one spot of the weekend. Though top qualifier Rhys Millen did not bring home the win, he still came away with very valuable second place points. Tanner Foust in the Rockstar Scion tC rounded out the top three winners of this weekend’s event.
Hope to see you at the next event!
