Finally, after a second Black Flag, we were able to do some hot laps.  It was still raining heavily, and there was standing water on several areas of the new South Course.  The video below shows my first green flag hot lap.  I was driving very slowly due to the slippery surfaces.  You can also see the weird line I had to take in Turn 5 to avoid mud, rocks, and standing water on the track.

Yes, I’m driving very slow, because you can see how hard it’s raining, the amount of water on course, and the fact that I’m driving a high-powered RWD car.

After the novice session was over, we headed back to the garage for an instructional meeting.  Jon Krolewicz, another SCCA instructor, pointed out how easy it was to slide in the rain.  He also pointed out that this illustrated just how close to the limit you drive in the rain on the street.  Taking a corner at a highway-friendly speed of 60 MPH was in some corners dangerously close to sliding!

After the meeting, I had about 30 minutes to kill before the next Novice session, so I took the opportunity to photograph some of the cool cars participating in the event.
