Jeep LS Swap Part 2: Donor Teardown
Comfort while working is key.
Getting to this point required 2 solid days of work, much ATF on my driveway, new words for the kids to learn, and a lot of hacking. Good gravy this engine is filthy.

Since I’ll be keeping the majority of the wiring harness and accessories, I carefully removed, labeled and cleaned all wiring and retention hardware.  Especially important is to label the injector and coil pack wiring.  I’ll be cleaning up and simplifying the harness, which means wire lengths won’t be the easy indicator of which cylinder each plug belongs to.  Given the 24 possible combinations per side for each connector, and that they’re all identical, this is important to the elevation of your hairline.  Yes.  You can tell by wire color.  That requires referencing.  I wrote down the cylinder number with a Sharpie because I know I’ll screw it up.  You will too.

While we did hack items that were a permanent part of the frame, we did avoid unnecessary damage to other parts to ensure resale value.

Splitting the transmission from the engine was relatively straightforward.  Remove access window, remove bolts from torque converter (doubly fun on an engine hoist), unplug harness (the shifter position harness had to be removed entirely since the connectors did not want to leave each other), remove bellhousing bolts, and split.  The biggest worry is just the sheer weight and awkward balance of the 4L60E with the torque converter.  It’s heavy, and it’s mostly heavy on the front.  Since most of us are advancing in age at an alarming pace, stretch a little before splitting and moving the transmission.

  1. Very interested in the project. Hoping to do the same thing in my 2000 Discovery some time over the next year or 2. Fortunately, I don’t have any emissions requirements.
