Feeling Michele's frustration and giving in to a little bit of their own, the Gruppe-S/Autosport Dynamics Crew went to work to find out what was wrong. First they eliminated the easy stuff such as loose connectors at the cam sensors and anywhere else that could snag. |
After finding all the connectors in place and tight, they pulled the plugs and found this. Cylinder #3 rich and even still a little wet. There was concern about oil, but after smelling and feeling the liquid, it was determined that it was just fuel. So, the first thing to try was to replace all the coils as a quick and easy diagnosis. |
However, with no spare coils, they needed to find some. New ones will be nearly impossible to locate in the time they needed, so a “parts car” just happened to be at the right place at the wrong time. Unfortunately, the coil swap only made a minor improvement which was mostly attributed to a change to fresher spark plugs. |
Next the team investigated to see if their setup could be over-fueling the engine for some reason. After looking over the rest of the connectors, they began to look at the connectors between the factory ECU and the piggyback. Lo and behold, really bad corrosion was discovered on the connectors, possibly from driving in wet conditions and not having adequate protection. However, cleaning the connectors produced no improvement. |
The catalytic converter clogged up? Knocked it out to find that it also wasn't helping. Luckily, the turbo really quiets down the tC. |
That would be all the diagnosis they could do, as now it was race time and they would have to run as best they could with three cylinders firing. While you would normally imagine this would mean the best that Michele could do would be third. That would also mean you forgot Edo and his suspension problems. Will that control arm really hold or will he be in bigger trouble than he wished for? |
