Nerds Eye View: BMW Team RLL Z4 GTE

,

The front-end of the car comes off as one big unit. The foundation seems to be the two rectangular aluminum sections which should attach to the main chassis. Everything else looks to hang off the foundations. On either side of the central radiator opening are the ducts which feed the brakes. Diffusers are built into the flat undertray in front of the front tires as we also saw on the M3. Hey, that’s a well-organized looking tool tray. Organized = fast in the pits.

These little end-plates are placed at the ends of the splitter. They should aid in generating additional downforce. Check out the minimal tow hook because real race cars minimize weight and aero drag.

The design of the rear half of the Z4 fender is reminiscent of the M3 fender (top picture where you can also see the diffusers integrated in the undertray).

The ‘fenders’ are actually part of the hood. Three aero latches are used to secure the hood. There was discussion as to the proper orientation of the aero latches on Project E36. In this case, two are pointing one direction with the central one placed in the opposite direction. So does it really matter what direction they are placed? It appears not to me. In the goal for organization in the pit area, that’s a sweet rolling rack to hold the rear wing and hood!
