Some race cars used to be mounted with minimal side mirrors to reduce aero drag. That’s not the case here where substantially sized mirrors are required for visibility in wheel-to-wheel racing. These mirrors are profiled very aerodynamically however to reduce drag as much as possible.
Besides going to a completely new car, BMW Team RLL had a massive learning curve with the new Michelin tires. Tire construction and compounds vary between the different manufacturers, and those variables significantly affect suspension setup.
So BMW Team RLL has had to learn and sort a new race car on new races tires for 2013. How have they done so far? Well, Team RLL driver Dirk Muller is leading the Driver’s Championship and BMW is in a close second in the Manufacturer’s Championship. It appears the Z4 GTE is picking up where the M3 left off with the M3 having won the Driver’s and Manufacturer’s Championships in 2011. Look for the team to pick up the pace even more as they become more familiar with the new Z4 GTE.
