Project Audi A4 Quattro: Part 1 – Introduction

,

Mmmmmmphhh, wagons may not be for everyone but user SteveLev on audiforums.ca works for us.

Some issues to be aware of with this chassis are:

Oil Consumption

We were consuming almost 2 litres oil between change intervals. This consumption has slowed somewhat with the updated parts installed for an extended warranty of the PCV system. If we ever get so far down the rabbit hole as to be machining the block then updated rings and a cylinder bore using a torque plate should address the issue once and for all. For now the engine runs strong and we will continue business as usual. Volkswagen/Audi spec calls for a full synthetic 5W-40 weight oil that meets the VW 502 00 standard.

Oil consumption is a reality for most with the VAG 2.0T engine, we typically carry a bottle in the trunk for just in case.

Cam Follower and High Pressure Fuel Pump Failure

The high pressure fuel pump necessary for direct injection is driven off an additional lobe of the intake camshaft via a follower that connects to the plunger of the HPFP. Audi released a revised camshaft and follower setup for the 2008 model year but even those have been known to fail.

This image from tyrolsport.com dramatically illustrates the importance of monitoring cam follower wear in these engines.

The best insurance against cam follower failure is to treat this piece as a maintenance item on a regular basis. Some folks recommend replacing the follower at every oil change but this is unlikely to be necessary for those in a more mild state of tune. We have inspected our follower for wear and it appears to be in good shape but we will still be replacing it as a precautionary measure in the near future. Inspect your follower as the next items to wear are the cam and the HPFP which are both many more magnitudes of cost to replace. There is an extended warranty for these items but your dealer will need to see pretty clear evidence of damage before they'll agree to the repairs.
