Project BOSS 302 Revival: Introduction

,

Sourcing a take-off hood, lighting, door, and complete rear bumper assembly was rather painless. The front bumper was another story…not salvageable soul in sight.

Over half the car would need to be repainted and the rear quarter panel fixed. The BOSS was towed down to 3rd Gear Customs to get fixed up and sprayed. We had worked with owner, Sergio, on another project and were confident that he could get our ‘Stang fixed up.

The only bit of sheet metal that needed to be repaired was the rear quarter panel. 3rd Gear Customs did a good job pulling the metal as flat as possible before massaging it with a light coat of body filler.

Matching the BOSS back to its original white. We will need to recreate the side stripes as well.

But What of the Powertrain?

A few weeks and a lighter wallet later, and our BOSS was nearly good as new. Our next hurdle was the powertrain. In a future story, we will show a moderately priced Coyote engine build that’s based off a F150 5.0 core.

We picked up a 2013 F150 take out Coyote for only $1800. These engines provide affordable cores for full rebuilds and are very close to the Mustang 5.0 engines for a fraction of the price. Stay tuned for a future article on the build.

Chalked full of goodies, our Coyote engine will be supercharged and make in the low 700 rear-wheel horsepower range. Summit Racing will be supplying a Ford Performance T56 Magnum XL kit to better handle the power we plan to make.
